Faculty of Medicine (UPN) “Veteran” Jawa Timur successfully hosted an international seminar with topic “Telemedicine and the Future Healthcare: Insights from Taiwan and Indonesia” on Tuesday, November 4. The event was organized in strategic collaboration with the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) Yunlin Branch. The agenda aimed to explore the vast potential of telemedicine technology in transforming healthcare systems in both nations, particularly in enhancing patient accessibility within remote regions.
In the opening session, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur, Prof. dr. Hj. Rika Yuliwulandari. M.Hlt.Sc., Sp.KKLP., M.MB., Ph.D., Subsp.FOMC. emphasized the critical need for future medical professionals to adapt to digital technology in the post-pandemic era. By partnering with NTUH Yunlin—recognized as one of Taiwan’s leading medical institutions—students and healthcare practitioners in Indonesia are expected to adopt best practices in the implementation of “smart healthcare.” This collaboration marks a significant milestone for UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur in expanding its international network to achieve excellence in innovative medical education.
Dr. Shan-Han Chang, as delegation from NTUH Yunlin Branch delivered a comprehensive presentation on Taiwan’s digital health ecosystem, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for remote diagnostics and real-time patient monitoring systems. Mr. Fang Chun-Hsiung and Ms. Chang Pei-Ching shared their experiences in Quanta Company about integrating national health data efficiently, ensuring high-quality medical services without the necessity of physical presence. This innovation is viewed as a crucial solution for Indonesia, given the geographical challenges inherent to its status as an archipelagic nation.
The panel discussion also highlighted the regulatory and infrastructural challenges Indonesia faces in implementing mass-scale telemedicine. Beyond technological readiness, a robust legal framework and public education are essential to build trust in digital health services. Representatives from both institutions underscored that telemedicine is not intended to replace the role of physicians, but rather to serve as a tool to accelerate medical response and streamline hospital bureaucracy.
The event concluded with a commitment to sustained cooperation between UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur and NTUH Yunlin Branch in the fields of research and academic exchange. This seminar is expected to act as a catalyst for medical technology development in East Java and across Indonesia, while simultaneously strengthening diplomatic and educational ties between Indonesia and Taiwan. Through this synergy, both parties expressed optimism that an inclusive, technology-driven future for healthcare can be realized for the global community’s well-being. (FK)
